Yahoo! Video Search Beta

Yahoo! tests a new video search engine and adds a new standard for supplying information about digital video files.

(December 15 2004) Yahoo! has silently launched the beta test version of its new video search engine.

Yahoo! gathers the video content by crawling the web, finding digital movie files and identifying them on the basis on the surrounding text. Whether Yahoo! also makes used of text content embedded in the video files is unclear.

Do not expect to find the latest Hollywood blockbusters by using this search engine, though.

Behind a simple Google-like interface hides -- as Gary Price has pointed out -- the "old" AltaVista video search engine.

In addition AltaVista also includes video files from so-called paying partners.

However, it is definitely possible to get Yahoo! and AltaVista to include your video files for free. Yahoo! will index links included in a relevant XML Media RSS feed. Hence, on the new Yahoo! Video Search site Yahoo! has included an RSS registration form.

The official Yahoo Blog points out that it is not easy for a web crawler to find downloadable and streaming video content: "In many cases, they're hidden behind complex JavaScript, Flash-based players, and other non-crawler friendly obstacles." By asking video producers to supplying information about files and their content, Yahoo! is trying to get around that hurdle.
