SearchKing claim denied by court(January 27 2003) As regular readers know, SearchKing has sued Google for altering its PageRank (i.e. one of the indicators used to determine ranking in results), and for removing many of its sites from the top pages of Google search results. SearchKing has demanded to be compensated financially and has asked the court to order Google to restore its PageRank. SearchKing also wants access to the source code of Google's ranking engine. Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange of the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma has now denied SearchKing's motion. We will not go into the details here -- read Lawmeme's excellent presentation of the case -- but will note that the judge has accepted Google's claim that the PageRank given to sites and pages is an "opinon" protected under the American constitutions (First Amendment), and not a "false fact". The judge argues that "There is an important distinction between difficulty in ascertaining damages and unqualified guesswork. In the case at bar, the latter applies." "Because of the speculative nature of SearchKing's damages, and the inability to establish a direct causal connection between the PageRank decrease and the alleged damages, the Court concludes that SearchKing has fallen short of demonstrating irreparable harm in the absence of injunctive relief, particularly in view of the applicable heightened standard of scrutiny." For general information on the SearchKing controversy, see our article "The SearchKing Google controversy revisited" and our interview with SearchKing's Robert Massa. Getting back to search engine marketing basics (again)(January 27 2003) The SEO industry is growing at a tremendous rate, with more companies realizing the benefits of this marketing medium. With this rapid growth come new minds, researching how to get better rankings, all looking for the basic information that will get them started down the road of SEO. Special guest writer Andy Beal presents his first article in a series on basic search engine marketing and optimization techniques. Feel free to ask him any related question by mail! Upcoming search engine conferences(January 26 2003) Socialize, mingle, get new friends and contacts, and -- above all -- learn from those who have been down this path before you. Pandia gathers a new batch of search engine conferences and workshops. Take the Google tour!(January 24 2003) Google has launched a separate sub-site presenting all its various features in thousands of colors. It is just another interface to the various services provided by Google, but a newcomer to Google (are there any?) would certainly benefit from visiting this page. Teoma 2.0(January 22 2003) SearchDay reports that Teoma is launching version 2.0 of its search engine. There are, for instance, new options on the page for advanced searching, including the ability to restrict searches to words in the title of the page or in the URL. Searches can also be limited to a site, domain, region or language. Teoma will now check for misspellings. Moreover, the words in your query will be highlighted in the description of the site. The number of pages in the search engine index has doubled to 500 million. Teoma is far behind AlltheWeb and Google in this respect (see below), but the database is definitely starting to become useful. Teoma is owned by Ask Jeeves, and Ask Jeeves uses results from Teoma to power its site. New year innovation from Fast AlltheWeb(January 21 2003) Fast has added new useful features to its AlltheWeb search engine, and behold: there is some true Boolean searching involved! At the same time Fast boss John M. Lervik reveals that Fast is preparing a search engine that includes information from "the Hidden Web", i.e. databases like Yellow Pages. phone books etc. Click here to read about Fast's new features and plans. 2003 Search Engine Marketing Buyer's Guide(January 20 2003) Guest writer Steve Winkler gives advice on what to look for when buying search engine marketing (SEM) services. The right choice can mean amazing success whereas the wrong choice could mean many thousands of dollars lost, but more importantly time and in that time the opportunity for your competitors to solidify their search engine stature. According to these calculation Google has the largest search engine database, followed by AlltheWeb. Like AlltheWeb AltaVista has increased the size of their index significantly and this oldtimer has now moved up to third place, followed by Wisenut. Greg Notess has calculated the following estimates of search engine sizes: Google: 3.0 billion Web pages It is interesting to note that the gap between Google and AlltheWeb has widened, and that AltaVista has managed to increase their database significantly. Source: Search Engine Showdown European co-operation between Fast and Espotting(January 16 2003) The European pay per click text ad provider Espotting will add Web search results from Fast to its paid listings. Espotting delivers pay per click results to a large number of European search sites, including -- from now on -- Fast's own AlltheWeb site. Most users of Espotting's pay per click ads, already have other sources of regular unpaid search results. However, Espotting may now offer portals and search sites a complete package of paid and unpaid results. The European Internet mobile portal O2 has apparently decided to go for this. Espotting will provide their top three paid listings on AlltheWeb's European search results pages. Fast signs contract with Elsevier(January 15 2003) You may not have heard about them, but Elsevier is actually an important name in the search engine world. The company provides fee based search facilities for scientists, researchers and professionals. Elsevier will now start using Fast's Data Search technology for generating and sorting search results on all its services. FAST Data Search already powers Elsevierís science search engine Scirus. Overture's new accreditation scheme(January 15 2003) Pay-per-click text ad provider Overture has launched its own accreditation scheme in the UK. The scheme is designed to indicate search engine marketers who fully adhere to Overture's list of best practices. Accredited companies agree to create the broadest range of relevant terms possible for a client, not submit sites which are under construction or have disabled back-buttons, ensure that descriptions and titles include the search terms, links connect to the appropriate page by deep-linking where possible and to not overcharge the client. One of the very first companies accredited was Barry Lloyd's MakeMeTop company. Yahoo! Light(January 13 2003) Are you tired of all the clutter on the Yahoo! home page and miss the simple interface of the good old days? Go to Yahoo! Search to get relief. This page presents the search form and the directory categories only. Google argues against the SearchKing lawsuit(January 13 2003) Last year SearchKing filed a lawsuit against Google, arguing that Google had illegally reduced the PageRank assigned by Google to the SearchKing site and other parts of the SearchKing network. (If this doesn't mean a thing to you, please see our article "The SearchKing Google controversy revisited" and our interview with SearchKing's Robert Massa.) Now Google has responded. The company admits no wrongdoing and asks the court not to grant an injunction. Furthermore it has filed its own motion to dismiss the lawsuit. Read James Grimmelmann's excellent review "Google replies to SearchKing lawsuit" (LawMeme) for more information and access to the relevant documents. Search Engine Ultimate Interface(January 12 2003) Fagan Finder has launched a beta version of a special advanced search page presenting a common interface for some of the major search engines on the Net. Search engines supported include Google, AlltheWeb, AltaVista, Intomi, Teoma, Wisenut, Gigablast, OpenFind and Northern Light. There are options for search terms, file types, date, language/region/site and more.
