GoogleGuy answersGoogleGuy, a representative from Google, is answering some interesting question over at Webmaster World. Pandia does some reading. (June 12 2003) The Webmaster World discussion forum on search engines and Internet marketing is unique in one respect: One of the most active participants is actually a representative for Google, and a very outspoken one as well. Needless to say, this makes WMW a very interesting place for people who want to understand the ins and out of how Google generates search results, and for search engine marketers in particular. Due to this fact there is even a separate site that quotes everything "GoogleGuy" says. The leading man at WMW, Brett Tabke, has now collected a large number of specific questions from forum members and asked GoogleGuy to answer them. The discussion thread contains some interesting reading. On Google's future use of Open Directory data, he gives no definite answer, but underlines that it is a good thing that the ODP is taking steps to improve its quality. We interpret this to mean that Google has no definite plans towards abandoning the Open Directory at the moment. Google uses the ODP both as the foundation for its own directory and as an important input to its ranking algorithm. Being listed in the ODP is interpreted as a sign of quality and will normally lead to a lift in rankings. GoogleGuy has a positive attitude towards the role of search engine optimization experts (SEOs), but clearly detests SEOs that gives bad advice or "does things well outside quality guidelines from search engines". This apparently happens quite often. He gives as an example an SEO using hidden text, hidden links to doorway pages as well as hidden links to the SEO's own site. The clients of this SEO may be punished rank-wise because of this. This is probably one of the reasons for why he encourages people to report spam to Google. You can read more about these and other topics at Webmaster World. What we find encouraging is that a company like Google chooses to prioritize its public relations in this way. GoogleGuy clearly knows how to keep a secret, but his interventions nevertheless serves to stop needless speculation and to improve learning in the search engine marketing community. However, he has not been able to stop speculations regarding his true identity, and we can't tell you!
