Pubconference IV

(April 30, 2003) Pubconference is back with a vengeance – this time in Boston Saturday April 26th, 2003. David Cecil from Search Engine Commando was there and submitted this report:

This is the fourth Pubconference organized by WebmasterWorld.com, the Internet’s largest forum system for webmasters and the search engine marketing community.

The format of this year's show was considerably more formal than in London or Irvine, a response to reactions from U.S. attendees of the Irvine show who suggested that there wasn't enough structured content.

The first half of the day (8am - 3pm) was spent in the Tremont Hotel's ballroom, where breakfast and lunch were served and everyone was seated at 8-person round tables. After breakfast, the sponsors were introduced and everyone was free to roam around and talk with each other and the sponsors.

At 11am, Matt Cutts from Google, Paul Gardi from Teoma, Tim Mayer from FAST/AllTheWeb and Dan Boberg from Overture gave presentations with slides, followed by a 45-minute question and answer session moderated by Todd Friesen (aka "Oilman").

The Elephant and Castle PubAfter lunch, which was served in the same ballroom, everyone was free again to move around and talk until 3pm, when everyone migrated over to the "Elephant & Castle" pub. The name and location of the pub had been kept secret until then to ensure maximum attendance.

About 200 people attended. Out of these some 80 were European, probably due to the Pubconference’s origin in London.

The conference was co-sponsored by Search Engine Commando, Google, FAST/AllTheWeb, Overture, Ask Jeeves, GoToast and PositionTech. Representatives from Search Engine Commando, GoToast, Overture, Google and PositionTech were on hand to show their wares and hand out door prizes.

The date for the next Pubconference in London has not been set, but according to Webmaster World leader Brett Tabke it is going to be two days with a full formal conference on Friday and traditional informal meeting on Saturday. One likely date is September 20 2003.

Regular readers of Pandia will have seen our reports from the previous pub and bar conferences, in London 2001, Irvine, California, and London 2002.
