Upcoming search engine conferences and workshops

(January 26 2003, update February 2) Nothing compares to direct communication face to face, even in this digital age. That is why we at Pandia are happy to offer an overview of upcoming search engine conferences and workshops once in a while.

Here are some conferences taking place in the next fiew months:

Search Engine Mastery Workshops

John AlexanderRobin Nobles and John Alexander have now made their search engine optimization workshops part of a six month mentoring program.

Participants first go to a workshop, and then begin a six month mentoring program at home. During these months they may study SEO strategies in depth and get their questions answered. There are several option to choose from, including beginners' workshops, advanced workshops and five-day all-inclusive workshops.

The next two days beginners class is held at Disneyworld Orlando February 18-19, 2003. The next advanced class i held at the same place on February 20 to 22. You may also choose to take part in both workshops.

The number of participants is limited.

Mining the Invisible Web

Access/Information is hosting "Mining the Invisible Web, a Competitive Intelligence Workshop," on Friday, March 21, 2003 at the University of Denver, USA, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Chris Sherman, co-author of The Invisible Web and president of Searchwise, a Boulder, Colorado-based consulting firm is the presenter. He will be providing seminar participants with strategies and tactics for uncovering the wealth of information beyond the scope and reach of Web search engines.

Internet Librerian International 2003

Visit the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK, March 25-27 for the Internet Librerian International 2003. As the name suggests, this this is an international conference for librerians and information professionals. Learn about the latest strategies, products and technology for finding, organizing, and maintaining information resources.

Each day at the conference features a keynote speaker and goes on to offer seminars on subjects such as practical web searching, intranets & portals, web design & development, and survival skills for Internet librerians.

The keynote speakers are:

  • John M. Lervik, CEO and co-founder of Fast Search and Transfer who will be predicting the future of search technology,
  • Richard Boulderstone, director of e-strategy at the British Library who will discuss the British Library’s digital future,
  • Martin Dodge of the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analyses at University College who will tell us if Internet librarians need maps of Cyberspace.

There will also be a day of preconference workshops on March 24. Spend the day at the WebSearch Academy with teachers such as Gary Price and Chris Sherman or learn about managing Web development projects, competitive intelligence & the Internet and much more. Search Engine Strategies Conference

Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Watch invites you to a new conference and expo in his Search Engine Strategies series in Boston on March 4 to 6 2003.

There will be speakers from About, Google, Inktomi, LookSmart/WiseNut, Overture, Yahoo, as well as experienced search engine marketers, including Detlev Johnson, Heather Lloyd Martin, Jill Whalen and -- of course -- Danny Sullivan and Chris Sherman.

Among the topics covered are search engine advertizing update, search term research, designing search engine friendly Web sites, buying paid listings, search engines and branding, search engine marketing and advertising agencies and much more.

Note that there is a similar conference in Sidney, Australia, on March 26 and 27.

The next conference in this series will be in Boston, Massachusets, March 4-6.

InfoToday 2003

In New York City you can visit InfoToday 2003 on May 6-8. This is a global conference and exhibition on electronic information, digital resources, and knowledge management. InfoToday 2003 is comprised of three conferences: National Online 2003, KnowledgeNets 2003, and E-Libraries 2003, and offers dozens of sessions and workshops for information professionals, librarians, researchers, and knowledge management practitioners.

The themes will include practical searching: skills, resources, and tools, Electronic Publishing: creation, distribution, economics, licensing, access, and E-Libraries: systems, software, support, implementation, digital Libraries.

CHI arranges a special workshop on "Best Practices and Future Visions for Search User Interfaces."
