Google launches blog search

Google has launced a blog search service. The same service is available with a Google-style interface and a Blogger-style interface – both equally sleek and uncluttered.

Google considers the blogging phenomenon an internet revolution and have made their presence felt in the blogsphere, most notably with their hugely popular Blogger service. They hope that the new blog search service will lead more people to explore blogs and perhaps take up blogging themselves.

Which blogs are indexed?

When you perform a search on Google Blog Search, the results include all blogs, not just those published through Blogger. Google says that the index is continually updated, so the results will be accurate and up-to-date. They aim to include all blogs that publish a site feed (either RSS or Atom).

If you publish a blog, Google Blog Search will find it if it contains a site feed and automatically pings an updating service. If, for any reason, your blog is not being indexed, Google plans to provide a form that you can use to manually add your blog to their index.

Google Blog Search lets you search for blogs published in many languages. In addition to English, the index includes blogs in French, Italian, German, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese and other languages as well.

Blog Search options

Searching with Google Blog Search is just as easy as performing a regular Google search. The search results are presented in the familiar Google way. You are given the option to sort the results by date or by relevancy.

In addition, there is an advanced search interface for those who want more control over the search. This presents you with options to specify titles, authors, languages and more.

The Blogger version of the interface includes an extra “use search options” link beneath the search box. This takes you to a few of the most common advanced options, e.g. a specific blog or a date range to search within.

You can search for specific posts or entire blogs. The main search results will return links to posts. When Google finds blogs that seem to be a good match for a query, these will appear in a short list just above the main search results.

All of the standard Google Search operators are supported in Blog Search. In addition, Blog Search supports the following new operators of its own: inblogtitle:, inposttitle:, inpostauthor: blogurl:.

For example, a search such as [keywords inblogurl:pandia] will show you posts about keywords published on blogs with “pandia” in the URL.
