New site on alternative search engines

kids searchingAt the same time as Google is taking over the world, entrepreneurs are trying to come up with alternatives. A new site, Alt Search Engines, is trying to cover all these search tools.

One of Pandia’s most popular articles this year has been Top 5 Alternative Search Engines, which proves that there is a genuine interest for alternatives to the big ones: Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft Live Search.

The Read/Write Network has now launched a new site covering alternatives to Google & Co called Alt Search Engines.

Alt Search Engines manages to deliver what it sets out to do: “Our goal for AltSearchEngines is to make it the definitive destination for everything related to alternative search engines - over 1,000 of them!”

Well, maybe not all 1000 yet, but the site is still young.

The depth of the site’s coverage can be read from some of the most recent headlines:

  • It’s not easy being green! (on environment friendly search engines!)
  • Why I hate my job: MizPee (search for the nearest clean restroom)
  • From Russia with Love - dialogus.ru (on a Russian semantic search machine)
  • The View from the Corner Office: PureVideo (write up by PureVideo’s CEO Erik Hawkins)

The editor is Charles Knight, the man behind the Top 100 alternative search engines list we covered in March.

The blog is regularly updated and has a easy to read, transparent design. Tabs at the top of the page lead to sub sections (Alts, Majors, Updates, In Beta, Newcomers, News, Verticals), while the right hand column contains a search field and a tag cloud. Nothing wrong here.

The writing style is free and entertaining and the use of illustrations creative. We are definitely going to subscribe to the RSS feed of this site!
