Autonomy to buy video search engine Blinkx
British Autonomy Corp. Ltd. is to buy the video search engine Blinkx.
Blinkx is already using Autonomy’s technology for indexing video content from YouTube, CNN, BBC and others. Blinkx delivers video search to other portals, including Quintura and Microsoft’s MSN and Live.com.
Needless to say, the interest in efficient video search has increased tremendously after the success of YouTube and other video sharing sites.
Blinkx was founded in 2004 by Suranga Chandratillake, and is one of the most advanced video search engines in the world.
Blinkx has its own spiders that crawl the Web, in addition to partnerships with 200 content and media companies. Blinkz reports that the search engine has indexed over 7 million hours of video content.
It should be noted that Blinkx goes beyond using related text and captions for identifying the content of videos. They also use speech-to-text transcription and visual analysis.
Autonomy plans to organize Blinkx and other consumer related activities in a new company called Blinkx PLC.
