Google New gives you information on the latest Google sites and services
Google (GOOG) has launched a new site called Google New, which gives you the latest news on the company’s products and services.
This is, of course, not the place to get critical reviews of the offerings of Google, but you will at least be kept informed about new search services, YouTube, Android, Google Docs, Google Mobile, Google Earth and Maps, and so on and so forth.
The Google New design is another example of Google simplicity: a set of boxes presenting news from the various Google divisions.
We are not sure if this is the right way of doing it. As the news article “boxes” are sorted by date, it is hard to get an overview of the different types of services without using the “Sort by” function. A Google News kind of lay out would have made it easier to read.
If you click on the relevant story headline Google will open some kind of text box page with the relevant article. It does not behave like a regular we page, though. The back button will not bring you back to the Google New home page. Instead you must click on Back to home. You should have some very good reason for changing traditional web navigation, and we cannot see the reason for doing that here.
The article pages do include links to the relevant Google news blogs, and it that respect Google New functions as a kind of portal for the various Google blogs. But maybe it would have been easier to link directly to the blog pages, instead of adding this extra step. By doing that Google would also have an explanation for the lack of a Google New RSS feed.
