Google adds web site creator
The new Google page creator lets people set up their own web sites in minutes.
Google has added a new tool to its formidable arsenal: the Google Page Creator.
Like similar services offered elsewhere (see for instance Apple’s .Mac service) the Page Creator lets users design their own web pages without having to know any HTML and without having to upload the pages to a separate host.
You design your pages online using a regular web browser and Google will host the pages for you on their servers.
Pandia has tested the service and can indeed confirm that it works in the way Google says it will.
You are presented with a simple four sections lay out where you add your own (1) headline, (2) subtitle, (3) main text area and (4) a bottom text area. A set of buttons represent tools for bold, italics, font type, font size etc. It is also easy to add and move images.
There are a large number of conservative, but well designed, templates to choose between and four lay out types defining different sets of columns. It is definitely not a tool you would use for designing corporate web sites, but for families or mom and pop companies the service may do.
Still, we have to ask: Will this service improve the online access to information? Will the sites created with the Google Page Creator contribute to the relevance of Google search results? Hm, we doubt it.
Moreover, persons wanting to present their lives online, might as well opt for Google’s own Blogger tool. The Google Page Creator is good for static web pages, but is not well suited for blogging.
So what will the new tool be used for? Well, there will obviously be quite some spammers out there trying to establish a large number of web sites with Google AdWords. Hopefully, Google has thought of that and found way of removing and/or penalizing them.
Given that the service is coupled with the Google email service, we would also guess that there will be quite a few GMail users out there establishing personal mini sites serving as an extension of their business card.
Such a web page could include relevant addresses, a photo, a CV, links to your favourite sites etc. You can easily put a link in your GMail (or any email) signature to this site, letting people get easy access to such details.
Given the fact that “googling” persons (i.e. searching for person names in order to establish their credibility or trustworthiness) has become a popular sport — for instance among employers searching for employees, lovers checking up on their dates and buyers looking for good suppliers — it does make sense to be able to present your own version of your life and history.
