MicroPlaza: Better search, trend watch and filters for Twitter (get invites!)
MicroPlaza is a personal web application that looks at your Twitter network and displays all the links shared by the people you follow. It also provides tools to search your friends’ tweets, filter information and watch Twitter trend topics.
Catching and tracking links
With MicroPlaza, it is easy to catch the important information, even if you have a large network. The basic concept is capturing all tweets with links in them and clustering tweets that contain the same link. It works like this:
MicroPlaza accesses your Twitter account and imports information about your network. When you (or any of your Twitter friends) share a link on Twitter, the tweet is displayed in MicroPlaza along with associated tweets, i.e. tweets that link to the same web page. These tweet clusters are called tiles.
The tiles let you see what your network is interested in at the moment. They also keep you up to date about the popularity of the links you have posted. This is very convenient if you are a blogger or a corporate tweeter.
Every tile originates from a link shared by you or someone from your network. However, they also contain tweets from people you are not connected to. In fact, a tile contains every other tweet containing the same link as the originating tweet by you or one of your friends. This provides you with a great tool for meme tracking. Watching the information you share spread across Twitter is fascinating.
Tribal search
Twitter’s own search tool is much better than it used to be. The advanced search gives a huge amount of options. MicroPlaza still provides added value: With the Tribal Search tool, you can search Twitter, MicroPlaza style.
The search results display a list of tiles, not single tweets, so you’ll always see the information in context. Tribal search is a great way to mine the resources of your Twitter network.
Trending topics
On the search results page, you also have access to a tool called Trending topics. This is yet another way to utilize the MicroPlaza Tiles.
Trending topics is a list of the top 10 topics on Twitter at the moment. Click one, and you get a list of tiles related to the topic. Today, among other things, you can see a list of tweets referencing Google Voice and Grand Central, all clustered around links to reviews and blog posts etc.
Trending topics is not restricted to your network, but references all of Twitter.
More MicroPlaza features
MicroPlaza has more to offer:
- The same clustering that is done to provide tiles for your network can also be applied to the public timeline on Twitter for even more trend spotting.
- You can sort your Twitter connections into tribes to browse tiles from a group of people.
- Bookmark interesting links.
- Browse tweets (not tiles) sorted by sender.
