Customize Google
CustomizeGoogle is a very handy Firefox extension that lets you customize your Google search results. That’s three of my favorite things in one bundle – Google, Firefox and more power to web surfers.
CustomizeGoogle adds an options item in the Tools menu of Firefox. These options let you change the way Google’s search engine results are presented.
For instance, you can choose to add links to Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, and MSN so you can perform your search over again in a different search engine.
You can also choose to switch on filtering, which lets you exclude web sites that you don’t want in your search results.
Here’s a list of features:
- Use Google Suggest (suggest words while you’re typing)
- Add links to competitors
- Rewrite links to point straight to the images in Google Images
- Removes image copying restrictions in Google Book Search NEW
- Secure Gmail, switch to https
- Remove ads
- Anonymize your Google userid
- Add a result counter in search result
- Filter spammy websites from search results
- Add links to WayBack Machine (webpage history)
- Remove click tracking
- Add links from Google to your bookmark manager NEW
By far the most eye-catching of these features is the option to remove ads from the Google search engine results page. I know a lot of people who will welcome this and personally I am very much in favor of everything that lets me control my own web experience.
But I also know people who make a living from AdWords. If this becomes a popular feature, they won’t be happy.
If you want have a look at some of the features and see how easy it is to install a Firefox extension, have a look at the 2 minute introduction flash movie.
The CustomizeGoogle extension even has its own brand new blog , where you can go to find the latest news about changes and updates.
The extension and the entire CustomizeGoogle web site is available in 26 languages, including my mother tongue, Norwegian. That’s something I dont’t see every day (or week, or month…).
