Linking and the new Google search rank algorithm

Google’s Big Daddy reshuffle and recent changes in the way the company selects and ranks Web pages have caused confusion and despair among webmasters. Pandia takes a look at the effect links have on search engine ranking.

Planet Ocean’s Search Engine News newsletter has a useful summary of the latest Google ranking and web page selection changes in its recent issue (subscription required).

The newsletter notes that a large number of web sites have seen their pages plummet in the rankings or disappear altogether from Google’s index. As Planet Ocean explains this is partly caused by some technical difficulties. However, as they point out:

The second, and far more important factor, is a substantially new paradigm in the way Google looks at linking relationships and the quality of your incoming and outgoing links.

Search engine democracy and link spamming

Google has always taken the number and quality of inbound links into consideration. This is a model taken from science: The number of quotations of peer review articles is taken as a sign of the quality of — and trust in — those articles.

Ask.com launches new blog search engine

Ask.com has launched a new web log and web feed search engine.

This one is a bit different from the regular blog search engines out there. It does not spider web log pages or RSS feeds to generate and index based on their content. Instead it makes use of Ask’s Bloglines tool.

Bloglines lets users gather information from their favorite blogs and RSS feeds, and gathers the headlines on a separate web page. This news aggregator also lets you save “clippings” for later viewing. Through this feature, users are actually tagging articles they find interesting.

Google not to build browser

There has for a long time been a rumor on the Net, regarding Google building its own browser. The main argument goes like this:

As more and more tasks can be done online (email, word processing, photo editing etc.) Microsoft will gradually loose the advantages of controlling the dominating operating system, Windows. This will open up the playing field for new players, developing web browser based services that can be used on all operating system.

However, Microsoft still controls the main browser, Internet Explorer. Hence, if you really wanted to defeat Microsoft you should make people switch to an another web browsing platform. Who could be better suited to this than Google, who has the strongest web navigation brand on the planet?

Google continues to be the biggest search engine in the US

Nielsen/NetRatings reports that Google accounted for 50 percent of all US searches conducted in April, followed by Yahoo! and MSN, with 22 and 11 percent. However, Google is not the leading web site of the US, nor does it control the social networking scene.

According to their press release [PDF file] Google has gained another three percent market share during the previous 12 months. Not much, maybe, but enough for us to conclude that the Google hegemony is far from over.

This doesn’t mean that all should be doom an gloom at Yahoo! and Microsoft headquarters. Search activity continues to grow, and according to NetRatings Yahoo! increased its number of searches with 27 percent last year, MSN 10 percent.
