May 9 2001. SearchDay: New daily newsletter from Search Engine WatchChris Sherman, previous editor of About Web Search, edits new daily newsletter from Search Engine Watch. Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Watch is undoubtedly one of the most influential persons in the field of Web searching and search engine optimization. Another well known expert is Chris Sherman, the previous editor of the About site on search engines. Sherman has now become part of the Search Engine Watch team -- a very powerful combination indeed. The SearchDay newsletterThe first offspring of this new partnership is the SearchDay newsletter, a daily mail containing Web search news, reviews, tools, tips, and search engine headlines from across the Net. Like the the Search Engine Watch's monthly newsletter, Search Engine Report, it is free, but it is much shorter, concentrating on one issue every day. SearchDay No. 2 included an introduction to the use of the Boolean AND operator. Sherman underlines that SearchDay is not only for advanced searchers. "While I will cover advanced techniques from time to time, one of the things I work hard to do is explain complex topics in language that's easily understood by people at all levels of knowledge and skill," he writes. "At the same time, I try to make sure that there's enough meaty content to satisfy advanced users." This sounds very much like our own "Pandian" philosophy. Newsfeeds from MoreoverAn essential part of the newsletter is selected headlines from the Moreover news service. These are the same as the ones you find under the "Breaking News" headline on the Pandia Search World home page. Sherman adds that he will be scanning for stories that may not be specifically about search engines, but that nevertheless have important information for searchers. Note that Tara Calishain of ResearchBuzz has another newsletter based on Moreover headlines. Unlike Sherman, however, she gives a personal comment to each headline. We would suggest that Sherman considers doing something similar, at least for a few selected stories. Note also that Robert Clough of Search Engine Guide publishes a newsletter with search engine headlines that is not based on the Moreover newsfeed. There you may find news stories not found in Moreover. It is a bit early to say whether SearchDay will become an indispensable part of an Internet searchers daily life. After all, you may find the Moreover headlines elsewhere. Still, knowing the expertise of Chris Sherman, we are taking no chances, and have signed up for a free subscription. About relaunches Websearch newsletterSherman's successor in the chair as editor of About's Websearch site, Kevin Elliot, has relaunched the About Web Search newsletter. This free newsletter returns to a weekly schedule, published every Tuesday. About is a collection of some 700 sites devoted to a wide array of topics, each and every one of them edited by a separate editor. About Websearch is not actually that much longer than SearchDay, one reason being that most of the content leads to longer articles on the About site itself. Kevin Elliott is the president of Computing Strategies 5000, a Web consulting firm based in Alberta, Canada. He is an expert in search engine implementation and search engine optimization techniques.
