April 28, 2001. Search Engine SizesGreg Notess has updated his excellent search engine size survey. Using 25 specific searches Notess has made an estimate of the size of the major search engines. According to his calculations, Google remains the largest search engine, followed by Fast, the MSN version of the Inktomi search engine, AltaVista, Northern Light, iWon's adaption of Inktomi and the English part of the Excite database. However, Notess underlines that just because Google found more total hits in general does not mean that it will always find more results on individual searches. On some of the 25 searches, other search engines found more than Google. Estimated search engine sizes:
