March 4 2001. Update March 7 2001. More changes at AltaVistaAltaVista's new focus on Internet searching rather than portal features has been welcomed by professional searchers and researchers. ResearchBuzz reports that we can expect more in the same vein. AltaVista is now using its large index also on the main version of its site (at http://www.altavista.com/). That's 550 million fully indexed pages compared to the previous 375 million. On March 7 AltaVista released a new "vertical" news search engine. The results are not based on information fetched by AltaVista's own search robots, but rather on listings delivered by Moreover and other news sources, much in the same way as Pandia's Newsfinder. There is also a new shopping search engine.
