Excite Precision Search

May 2000

The Google-effect is spreading. Excite is now launching its new "Precision Search", with a cleaner interface and more precise results. Excite claims that it is identifying expert sites for particular topics, and analyzing the cross-linkages between those sites. Like in Google, sites with many links from expert sites are given higher priority.

Excite used to present Web results together with results from its directory and news search engine. Now, results are from Excite's Web index only. You click on separate links to get category results, news, photos and audio/video.

You click on the "More" link on the Excite home page to get to Excite Precision Search, or you may use the link below.

This is definitely a step in the right direction. Excite has been passive for too long now. It has also been slow in updating its search database. It seems that the innovative Google search engine has finally managed to wake this giant, just like it did with Alta Vista (see below).
