Yahoo and eBay in merger talksMarch 2000 There are strong rumours that the worlds largest Internet directory and portal, Yahoo!, is discussing a merger with the online auction pioneer eBay. These two are the most popular e-commerce sites on the Web. Yahoo has already swallowed several sites whole, including the popular 411 people search facility and Broadcast.com, a directory of radio stations transmitting over the Net. Yahoo has its own auction site, but the eBay trade mark is so strong that it is unlikely that Amazon will integrate eBay completely into its own site. "Informed sources" confirm that the two are considering a "loose alliance". Our European readers should note that eBay has opened its own UK branch.
